International humanitarian aid project in Tajikistan

In mid-May this year launched a German-Austrian doctors group to Tajikistan in Central Asia. On the project to help children with cleft lip and cleft palate was also Dr. Dr. Thomas Clasen part of our group practice, which could operate in conjunction with two other oral and maxillofacial colleagues in Aachen and Salzburg, a total of 66 children with congenital cleft lip and / or cleft palate.
Since the country gained independence in 1991 and by the civil war in the years 1992-1997, the country suffers from a serious medical deficiency, which makes such humanitarian assistance is necessary.
Already last year by the ENT colleague, Dr. Martin Kamp organized such use and first performed. At least since the time it was clear that this country needs a longer-term support.
Although in this country, the incidence of children with congenital cleft lip or cleft palate is not higher than in Germany, there is a huge need. Many poor people lack not only the financial resources to such an operation, but there is no local specialist doctor who can perform such operations.

For Dr. Clasen, it was the fourth mittlereile Use which he conducted with the support of our practice.

The aim of the relief operation was not alone the conduct of operations on children with cleft lip and cleft palate, but also to help themselves, by physicians from the capital Dushanbe, the different surgical techniques were taught. This is to the local training of oral and maxillofacial surgeons are encouraged to eventually launch a competence center for cleft lip and cleft palate in life.
