Since that time has indeed improved a lot already, but for most Angolans is the nutritional and health situation catastrophic. And so, although there the Angolan government for its rich oil deposits and diamonds is not quite bad. Unfortunately, due to a severe corruption and nepotism in the distribution of land extremely unfair.
It lacks the country not only to basic medical care, but also for clean water and a good education.
Only about 30% of Angolans have access to basic medical care. The mortality rate among children under five years, the second highest in the world. Malaria, leprosy and tuberculosis are common.
For a little hope for children with cleft lip and palate caused the first time, Dr. Thomas Clasen, with a 4-member medical team from Germany-established the contact with an Angolan NGO. It is the organization Kimbo Liombembwa, chaired by Dr Neto Rosalino that lobbies for more than 20 years for the poor and neglected children in Angola and works very closely for this long time with the Peace Village in Germany.
From 12.11. up to 20.11.2011 was due to this compound by the German medical team operated under the direction of Dr. Thomas Clasen now 22 children with cleft lip, jaw and palate. This was the first use of a German medical team in Angola since the end of the Civil War.
Due to the many needy children more humanitarian operations in Angola are planned for the coming years and also to interested Angolan doctors are trained in these surgery techniques. The objective is to create a center for cleft surgery in Benguela, no longer need to support the Angolan foreign doctors. The self-help is thus clearly the focus.
This application was supported not only by our practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery, but also of Interplast and Prointerplast. These are two organizations that support such operations financially.
